Protecting Nesting Sea Turtles in Volusia and Flagler Counties, Florida.
Leatherback Sea Turtle Nesting
April 17, 2024 in Ormond Beach, Florida
Leatherback sea turtles are the largest species of turtle in the world. They can reach six feet in length and weigh up to 1,500 pounds! Leatherbacks are the first species to nest on our beaches each spring, typically March through July. They come to nest several times each season, one to two weeks apart. Each time they will lay a clutch of approximately 100 eggs. If you see a leatherback, or any other species of turtle nesting on the beach, please be respectful and watch quietly from a distance.  Crowding, sudden noises/movements or bright lights at night may cause them to return to the ocean before laying their eggs. If you see someone harassing a sea turtle, please call the FWC at 888-404-3922 for assistance.
